Aardvark Pest Management, is proud to have the first bedbug detection canine in Philadelphia.
In recent years bedbugs have made a comeback, bedbug infestations were common in the United States before World War II. But with improvements in hygiene, and especially the widespread use of DDT during the 1940s and '50s, the bedbugs all but vanished. However the pests remained prevalent, in other regions of the world including Asia, Africa, Central/South America and Europe. These blood sucking insects have become a nuisance in hotels, apartment, college dorms, hospitals, nursing homes, cruise ships, jails or anywhere there are sleeping quarters. Oftentimes, unsuspecting travelers carry these uninvited quests on their clothing or luggage and inadvertently infest their own homes.
It can be difficult to determine when there is an infestations of bedbugs, traditional methods of finding bedbugs have been proven to be only 17 to 30% accurate. On the other hand NESDCA certified canine average 98% accuracy rate in detecting eggs and the odor of live bedbugs. Dogs have the unique ability to "sniff" out the eggs and live bedbugs in the same way they can detect drugs or bombs. This ability is referred to as CSD (Canine Scent Detection), which gives their trainers a simple sign to confirm a discovery. Bedbug Dogs have the unique ability to be able to find a single bedbug, which gives us an advantage in the war against bedbugs.

Try not to be alarmed if you find bedbugs or have bites. Bedbugs are not known to carry diseases, although allergic reactions are possible. There is no magic bullet to use against bedbugs. Once you have identified a bedbug infestation, you will probably require the help from a professional.
To get rid of bedbugs, you must remove clutter such as pictures, books and clothing from the infested areas so there are fewer places for the bugs to hide. Vacuuming will remove some of the bedbugs, but the eggs are glued in place and cannot be removed by vacuuming alone. When vacuuming, concentrate on mattress seams and around any cuffs or buttons. Vacuum wherever your inspection revealed the presence of bedbugs. Remove the vacuum bag immediately, place it in a sealed plastic bag and dispose of it outdoors. Infested items such as clothing, shoes, bedding and blankets can be placed in a clothes dryer on high heat for 30 minutes to kill bedbugs and their eggs. Mattresses and box springs may be enclosed in bed bug-proof zippered cover to kill the bugs inside. The cover should remain in place for more than one year, because bedbugs can survive a long time without feeding. Infestations will usually require the use of pesticides in conjunction with the cleaning and vacuuming methods listed above. Chemicals are most safely applied by a licensed professional. Professionals have access to the insecticides that are most effective against bedbugs and are trained in their proper application.
